what is audio of the week?
audio of the week is where i take a track or dj mix/set and share and write about it on here. i want to try to update it weekly, but there will absolutely be a few weeks that i miss here and there due to life v_v
while i definitely have the gatekeeper mindset about music that i find, i feel like sharing music or sets i find on this site will be very meaningful, since this site won’t get that much traffic. sharing music on a platform, say, tik tok, is often very very explosive, and at least to me, the growth can feel a lot less genuine. to that aspect, i think gatekeeping is very necessary in this day and age, where the wrong crowds can find diamonds and turn them into dust or ruin a fan base.
with audio of the week, since the crowd will definitely never be explosive, the music sharing will be small and genuine. the growth will be organic, both for myself and for the artist i share. which is why, on here, i chose not to gatekeep, and i wish to share amazing music and sets that i find and hope genuine pairs of eyes can find the music and help grow the artist’s music i share! :)))
this [ . trip | art piece . ] track is phenomenally creative. something about it just feels so familiar yet so extremely alien… it has me question my own [ . reality | ] as i listen to it. it’s a ::hallucination:: from start to finish.
the very clever use of sampling is right up in your face for the whole track. the bass line feels very [ disjointed. strange ] for the whole track, but it works so very well and blends in very eloquently with the vocals and higher melodies.
what even is that [ ( whistling ) ]? where is it from? why does it sound like i’ve heard it before? is it.,, from a, [||dream||] ? is my brain making up [ MEMORIES ]? or is this some sample that everyone else knows and i’m just behind (lol)?
the track feels like ur being injected with a weird windows vista-age virus that paralyzes ur mind into experiencing the insides of an old laggy dinosaur computer.
the [ . cover | song || ] overall in my opinion takes heavy tones from the xpiritualism internet art movement. i enjoy seeing the movement, but it isn’t without its flaws.
xipiritualism is an internet art movement best characterized by observing three main aspects: old web art, spirituality and/or religion, and the inclusion of various worldwide cultures. it is not an aesthetic or a style, but rather a broad collective of ideas and elements that isnt strictly chained to one single idea. the community in which xpiritualism houses is one that is constantly trying to push itself to evolve their ideas while also maintaining similar and consistent motifs. a movement in which it draws from many aesthetics and styles to create something more grand. source
while im sure the movement means well, there are ideas that i see in various art pieces that i dont really appreciatethe movement often uses foreign languages to fit an aesthetic, which is problematic in my opinion. i specifically see it more with Arabic. it is often used in a way to make an image feel eerie, uncanny, and/or scary. it’s a shame that such a beautiful language is painted in some of these art pieces in such a degrading way.
it also uses [ to me ] unfavorable imagery of old japanese dating simulator point and click video games, which im also very much not a fan of. the anime characters in these are often depicted as young and sexualized [ + in vulnerable positions | ].
i didnt really want to post examples of that on here but you can mainly find such art as cover art for many songs that fall under xpiritualism.there are ideas however, that i see that i do really like and appreciate. theres this weird, uncanny valley feeling i get when i see a lot of the art that doesnt freak me out when i see it, but instead it makes me feel like im longing for something i may have lost.
I especially LOVE the low res aspect in a lot of the art pieces and songs i see/listen to. it always feels like it’s trying to pry open my brain and inject false memories in me. I like that.
overall the track and cover art is hallucinatic, eerie, and absolutely intoxicating. i wasn’t able to find much on the artist themself, they do have a twitter but i no longer have an account, and i wont be making one, so i can’t see their tweets, and their instagram is private. but thats ok! we can still enjoy the track from the small window of this person’s creative vision and take it for what it is :)
